It's a line-of-sight phenomenon — a temporary disappearance that tells us about the sizes, orbits, and atmospheres of worlds we can't otherwise examine. When Neptune occulted a star in 1984, astronomers mapped its upper atmosphere from the way the starlight dimmed before disappearing entirely. The occultation didn't hide the planet's secrets. It revealed them.
